The Power of Our Words - Study Guide & Memoir #11

Introduction to the Book

There are moments in life when we are confronted with a truth so undeniable that it demands a response. Moments when we realize that what we say, what we declare over ourselves and others has power beyond what we can see. For me, that moment came with a phone call that sent a chill down my spine. I was already reeling, trying to adjust to life as a newly single mother with a ten-month-old daughter, carrying another life inside me, a child whose existence was suddenly in question. Not because of a medical report. Not because of any physical sign of danger. But because of a lie. A lie spoken by someone I had once trusted. A lie that carried weight in the unseen realm.

"I’m so sorry for your loss."

The words rang through the phone like a verdict, but they weren’t true. I hadn’t lost my baby. I had just heard his heartbeat days before. But the damage had already been done somewhere, in the spiritual realm, death had been spoken over my child. And in that moment, I couldn’t shake the feeling that those words had set something into motion. Two days earlier, I had been rushed to the hospital. My baby's heartbeat wasn’t what the doctors wanted to see. As I prayed the entire way there, I had no idea that somewhere else, a false declaration of death had already gone out. Had those words contributed to the attack on my child’s life? Had they created an opening for fear, for doubt, for destruction?

I didn’t know the answers, but I did know this: words carry power.

The Bible tells us in Proverbs 18:21 that “The power of life and death is in the tongue.” That’s not just poetry. It’s true. Our words are not empty; they shape realities, shift atmospheres, and invite either God’s presence or the enemy’s influence.

I think about Zechariah, the father of John the Baptist. When the angel Gabriel told him that his wife, Elizabeth, would bear a son, he doubted. He questioned. He spoke uncertainty instead of faith. And God responded by silencing him until the promise was fulfilled. At first glance, that seems harsh. But what if God wasn’t punishing Zechariah? What if He was protecting John’s destiny? What if God knew that Zechariah’s words, his doubt, his fear, his uncertainty could interfere with the miraculous plan He had set into motion?

What if God, in His mercy, removed the ability for death to be spoken over something that was meant to bring life? This testimony is about the moment I realized just how real this battle is. It’s about learning that words are not just sounds, they are weapons. They can create or destroy, bless or curse, align with heaven or open doors for the enemy. And this isn’t just my story.

It’s yours too.

Because whether we realize it or not, we are all speaking something over our lives, our families, our futures. And what we speak matters.

Maybe, like me, you’ve experienced the weight of words—words that shaped your identity, words that tore you down, words that lingered long after they were spoken. Or maybe you’ve spoken words in frustration or fear that you wish you could take back.

This study isn’t just about understanding the power of words. It’s about choosing to speak life. It’s about breaking the power of lies, renouncing words of death, and replacing them with the truth of God’s promises.

Because God has already spoken over your life.

The question is: Are you speaking what He says or something else?

Together, we’ll walk through Scripture, reflection, and practical application. We’ll study how words shaped destinies in the Bible, how some spoke life and saw miracles, while others spoke doubt and faced consequences. We’ll dive deep into the story of Zechariah and why God shut his mouth. And most importantly, we’ll learn how to align our words with God’s will so that we partner with Him, not against Him.

I believe that as you walk through this study, chains will break. Negative words that have been spoken over you whether by others or by yourself will lose their power. You will begin to see the shift that happens when you declare truth instead of lies, faith instead of fear, life instead of death.

Because words create. And what you speak, you will see.

So let me ask you:

What are you speaking over your life today?

And more importantly, what will you choose to speak tomorrow?.
